Dear Readers,
Elisabetta Brunella

In this issue we return to the role of the movie theatre as the driving force of neighbourhood life and urban centres, visiting the United States to present the emblematic case of the Carolina Theatre. This “historical” place of entertainment has lasted right up to today, managing to avoid speculative moves thanks to the perseverance of the citizens of Durham, determined to conserve a pole of culture and social life at the heart of the city centre.

On the theme of the sustainability of movie theatres, we continue our tour, focusing on the experience of the Cines Verdi in Spain and the green policy of Cineworld, one of the leading groups on an international level.

We hope you will find inspiration in this new issue of DGT Online Informer,

Elisabetta Brunella

Cinemes Verdi: sustainability in the heart of Barcelona
by Elisabetta Brunella

Cinemes Verdi is a small but prestigious circuit of quality cinemas active in Madrid and Barcelona. In the Catalan capital the brand includes nine screens, located in the famous Gràcia district, easily accessible by public transport, which for over forty years have been characterized not only by the programming of arthouse films, mostly independent productions and cultural content, but also for the variety of audience building initiatives and for the attention paid to specific segments of the public.

In this field, the "Jueves de Imprescindibles" stand out, i.e. the screening - once a week - of cinematographic classics of all time accompanied by a critic's commentary, or the morning shows specifically designed for mothers with babies, offered at particularly favorable conditions not only in terms of price. In fact, sound levels are reduced and theatre lights are left dim.

But Cinemes Verdi combines attention to programming and spectators with attention to the environment. From 2022, in fact, these Catalan cinemas have been covering 60% of their energy needs thanks to photovoltaic panels, while various measures had already been adopted with the aim of reducing water consumption as well as the use of paper and the use of chemical products for disinfection.

In fact, toilets have been equipped with taps that regulate the flow of water, while LCD screens have replaced paper posters and spectators are encouraged to purchase digital tickets online. Finally, specific containers have been placed in the screening rooms and common areas for the collection of paper to be recycled.

In short, Cinemes Verdi shows how even movie theatres that have existed for several decades and operate in the heart of a very dense urban fabric, rich in history, can contribute to reducing the impact of the cinema sector on the environment.

The cinema chains and their green policy: Cineworld
by Samuele Paolinelli

Amongst the various aspects that mark the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) of the Cineworld Group, an international chain of cinemas operating in ten different countries with over nine thousand screens, is the imposition of respect for a series of principles bound to environmental sustainability, in order to make its work more and more environmentally friendly.

Aware of the impact that the company’s work has on the environment, the Board of Directors has approved a programme for mitigating this, by adopting a mode of operation that is more sustainable and respectful of legislation in this field.

As stated in its website, the Company believes that the changes aiming to minimize its environmental impact also have a beneficial effect on the balance sheet, partly reducing running costs.

From a practical point of view, some of the measures implemented in many of the Group’s cinemas include the encouragement to buy electronic tickets, so as to reduce the quantity of paper used and thus the amount of waste generated. With the same objective in mind, in many of the more recent or renovated cinemas, posters have been replaced by digital equivalents.

To sum up, the Group has embarked on a path to make its actions greener, starting out from the awareness that every sector must reduce its environmental impact and launching initiatives aiming to make a drastic reduction in the use of paper in cinemas.

The “Carolina Theatre” in Durham: the renaissance of the city centre thanks also to the
re-opening of a movie theatre

by Elisabetta Galeffi

North Carolina, one of the thirteen states on the east coast that founded the United States, has a long and ancient history. Ancient for the States.
Around five hundred kilometres south of Washington DC and Baltimora, Raleigh, the state capital, takes its name from the first Englishman to be remembered in these parts, Sir Walter Raleigh, who landed on the New Continent at the end of the Fifteen Hundreds.

But it was not until the Sixteen Hundreds that Carolina became a British colony, with a name chosen to honour the memory of the Stuart King Charles I. The strength of the First People of America was felt for a long time in these territories, as they rebelled vigorously against the first Anglo-Saxon settlements and the intrepid farmers who came in search of a better climate and fertile soil.

Strolling in the vicinity of Durham, the fourth most densely populated city in North Carolina, half an hour’s drive from Raleigh, it is still possible, on the lovely paths through the woods, to come across the tombs of the English who established farms, later to become estates, when Great Britain managed to defeat the First people and settle stably in this area.

Today Durham is a pole of excellence for medicine and, together with Raleigh and Chapel Hill, forms the United States’ so-called Triangle of research: three cities and three large and important universities. This success also results from the fortunes of the descendants of English colonizers.

In Durham it was the Duke family - which made a fortune from growing tobacco - that inspired what is today the renowned university of the same name, arising out of the evolution of Trinity College, which is now present with its offices, its foundations and support in all fields of the city’s activities.
