From the seventh edition of the course
“DigiTraining Plus: European Cinemas Experiencing New Technologies”

Helsinki, 17-21 February 2010

- daily update -

The participants at the seventh edition of the course “DigiTraining Plus: European Cinemas Experiencing New Technologies”, opening tomorrow in Helsinki, come from as many as 13 different countries and are over 60.
The initiative, organized by MEDIA Salles with the support of the European Union and the Italian Government, is the only training measure in the MEDIA Programme devoted to digital technologies from the theatres’ point of view.
Following a method that has been appreciated and consolidated over the years, the course programme will alternate lectures on theory, group-work and visits in the field.
In line with this close relationship between theory and experience, this year it will be Finland to host the course: thanks to the project “Network of digital cinemas”, approved in 2009 by the Ministry of Education and the Finnish Chamber of Films, whose objective is to involve the whole of the cinema chain in digitalization, today this Nordic country constitutes an interesting European lab for digital cinema.
At January 2010, 48 screens - i.e. around 15% of the total number of screens - already had digital projectors installed.
Some of the most innovative of these cinemas will be visited during the course, such as the Flamingo complex, belonging to Finnkino, the major exhibition chain in Finland, or the Bio Grand in Tikkurila, a digital 3D cinema 15 km north of the Capital.
A close-up on Finland, then – thanks also to an open-door session on Thursday morning in collaboration with the Finnish MEDIA Desk – but with plenty of attention to all the signs coming from other parts of the world; a focus will, for example, be devoted to Russia and to burning issues on the international scenario, from the different business models being adopted or tried out, to the availability of digital content, to the prospects for 3D.
As always during the course, the DGT Online Informer transforms itself to provide a daily bulletin and keep you up-to-date on course proceedings and the topics covered, as well as introducing the speakers, well-known professional players on the international scene.
